Entries in Lone star quilt (10)

One booboo after another!

I had to revise my tulip star pattern.  When I designed it in EQ, I made the center star thirty eight inches… my star was actually thirty nine inches.  Of course I also used the wrong back ground fabric, and my original design didn’t look right swapping the two colors around.  Original design on the right, revised (and not so pretty) on the left.

I don’t like this as well, but I like it enough that I’m going to continue.  I made yet another mistake though! C an you spot it?  I’m not fixing it… I’m hoping it won’t be overly noticable when the quilting is done.  I won’t however, be entering it into the fair!

The easy borders are on… time to start the ones that will drive me crazy!  I’d hoped to get more done on this today, but I ended up canning green beans from the garden. I have another batch to do tomorrow.

Star in the making!

Ha! How’s that for ambitious?

Remember this quilt?  The one I should be working on?

I did get another border pieced.  A long one at that!  They take forever, since the strips are only a half inch… one day I will get this done!

But meanwhile, I couldn’t resist starting on the new quilt I designed.

The center lone star portion is done.  Of course, if the borders for the quilt above have me dragging my feet with all the little pieces, what do you suppose is going to happen with this one? !!!

I need to get a move on though, I plan to custom quilt this one and enter it into the fair.  Of course I planned to do one last year too and we know how that didn’t happen!

OMG…. having just posted this photo and seeing my earlier blog post below with my digital design… I realize I’ve used the wrong background fabric!!!

Good grief.

Lone star finished!

I finished the quilting on the lone star yesterday, but didn’t get around to the binding until this morning.  It’s hot, humid and breezy outside, and I couldn’t get the quilt to lay flat long enough to get a nice picture, it’ll have to wait for another day… plus it’s a bit rumpled as I didn’t press it after taking it out of the dryer, and my dryer kept wadding it up into a roll!

But you get the idea!

I struggled with how I wanted to quilt this one.  I’ve never seen a lone star with anything but custom quilting, and the star is always done with continuous curves, a look I simply don’t care for.  And of course, I love pantos!  But what panto would look good on a lone star?

As luck would have it, I recently added a new panto to my collection, “Royal Plumes” by Judy Allen.  You can find it on my pantograph page, it’s the very last one.

I decided it would be perfect!  This one is a bit of a challenge to do.  The panto design is a full 17 inches wide, leaving me a half inch to spare with a large quilt rolled up on the frame.  The quilt measures 82 inches by 89 inches.  I used Quilters Dream Blend for this one… my least favorite of the Quilters Dream battings, but I didn’t want the quilting to overshadow the lone star.

I cropped a couple pictures at a hundred percent so you could see the quilting close up, it doesn’t realloy show in the first photo.

Almost there!

One more border to go on the lone star, and I’ll finally be finished piecing it.  The last border will be the lighter blue that is the same as the first border.  As you can see, in the end I opted for plain borders with corner blocks.  Lazy.  Actually nothing else I tried looked right.

I do wish I’d added more than 8 inches to the length, but I didn’t think I’d have enough of the background fabric.  I do have some fullness in the background corner sections, and will have to spend some time steaming and starching it out, ugh.

Guess what I did yesterday? I cancelled our satellite tv.  Jim and I decided we spend too much time watching it, and we have no rooftop antennae. But if we really want to watch something, we can rent it via the Apple TV, or stream it from Hulu to the Xbox, so I guess we aren’t really sacrificing it. I just thought I’d make it so it’s a bit of a pain, and we’ll go do something productive intead of watching TV!  Plus it’ll save $80 a month!

I tossed a 10lb pork roast in the smoker when I got up this morning, and hopefully it will be done by dinnertime.  Bread’s made, now to put that last border on!
