Design wall Monday

More fun today!  Well yesterday actually, today I won’t have time to play anymore with this.  I have the decorative stitching and quilting nearly done.  I’m going to make a project tote bag out of this one.   This will be the front piece.

Today I have my first online “Glacier Star” class, I can’t wait!

Sometime earlier this year I stitched out a few elephant appliqué designs, planning to make a quilt of some sort with them, but nothing came to mind.

Then I received my copy of the December/January 2012 issue of McCall’s Quick Quilts and the pattern on page 58 really caught my interest.  I think it needs something more, so I’m not exactly sure where I’m going with this, but I would love to add my elephants to this quilt somehow.

I’ve got to go through my stash and see if I have a green solid to match the grass under the elephants, if so I might add a teensy border in that color.  I guess I better make a mock up in EQ and figure out if this will work or not!

No go on the Airstream.  Whew… color me relieved!  It wasn’t hard to convince Jim he’d go stark raving mad in there parked somewhere for a six month job… there is no storage to be had for essential books, sewing machines… cookies, FOOD… well you get the picture.  And that was in a 31 foot unit!  I think we may look for a smaller 5th wheel… but a 5th wheel and I get along just fine.

The IQ is installed!

I can’t wait to play!  I’m having a bit of an issue with the thread detection wheel, but once that is worked out I’ll be going to town.  I must say, Angela has been absolutely wonderful to work with. She requested I let her know what day we’d be doing the install so she could free up her schedule, but I wasn’t able to do that… you all know how it is with Jim and scheduling, his workload is worse than any doctor’s.  P-L-A-N… 4 letter dirty word!  So we installed it here and there over the last couple of days, and emailed Angela whenever we had a question. She’s been terrific!

I’m a little late today, as I didn’t have anything on my design wall this week, having scratched the mystery block of the month… but I thought I’d come upstairs and clean up the mess of jelly roll strips that are piled up in the window from making the sewing machine covers.

Being a lazy slob that gets easily side tracked, I sat down and made a block… and then decided rather than clean up all the strips, I’d just make a scrappy quilt out of them.  Twelve inch sampler blocks, whatever I can create from jelly roll (two and a half inch strips), will make up this quilt.

That beats cleaning up don’t you think?  My very own mystery quilt, because I’ve no idea what it’s going to look like!  There’s the first block!

I’m cheating… it’s actually Sunday afternoon, but I’m pooped and have nine million things to do tomorrow, and I’ll probably forget to make my post if I don’t do it now!

This quilt is getting worked on in between everything else, but all the time consuming parts are now done, I just have to put my four borders on it.  Speaking of borders… why do I keep seeing quilters lately talking about their “boarders” on their quilts?  Aaagghh!

The skinny half inch red border around the center, then the log cabin border, another red border (an inch this time) and finally and black floral outer border… which hopefully I have enough fabric for!

You may notice my center block changed again!  I didn’t have enough of the tan fabric for the star, so I had to come up with a block that used more of the other prints.  Then I ran out of the checked black, and so this block wasn’t quite what I had in mind either!  And oh what a booger it was to piece!  I should have redrawn it so that there wasn’t any set in seams, as it was there were eight of them, bleh!

That’s kind of a cool block though isn’t it?  Reminds of “Card Trick”, only with a star in the middle.

Jim should be home Tuesday night, woohoo!  Seems like he’s been gone forever… and I need him to come home and save me from ice cream overload!

Make sure you head over to Judy’s (tomorrow) and see what everyone else is up to!
