Another day on the land
Sunday, March 4, 2012 at 6:47AM Our realtor called yesterday to let us know we could go walk the land and inspect the survey, so off we went! We had the good fortune to meet the couple selling the land, and we loved them! There were some teary eyes, lots of smiles, and I think we will become fast friends!
They had lots of memories to share, and Jim and I look forward to hearing many more. They live right across the road, and over the years they brought first their children, and then their grandchildren here to play and work the land.
All the pastures were cleared of trees and rocks by hand, which explains why the ground is so wonderful down there. They aren’t well enough to keep up with it anymore, but we’ll get them whipped into shape in no time. After we close, I plan to call the county extension agent out to test the soil and let us know what amendments it needs… and of course a brush hog, some clippers, a land rake… and all will be well again.
I added a gallery to my blog, over in the “Cooking, Gardening and Farmlife” section called the “Future Homestead” and have uploaded more photos from yesterday’s walk. I will add future galleries to this section as we make progress out there. Enjoy!

CJ, I am so happy for you that you have found your special place. I love looking at the photos, I can see why you fell in love with that place. I'm living vicariously through your photos -- looking forward to seeing more.
The land looks wonderful and with each post you make it seems like it is all really falling in place. How awesome!
CJ, I am looking forward to following you through your new journey in your homesteading adventures! Your land is so beautiful!
I know how I/we feel about our land and can totally understand where you are coming from. From casual walks in the woods to family/friends enjoying a bonfire/cookout at the picnic clearing (used to be part of our boys' go-cart track years ago!) it is a huge blessing! Nothing like the perfume fragrance in the Spring when everything is waking up after winter dormancy!!! Love it!! Hugs, Doreen
Beautiful land CJ! Congradulations. Will be watching the development of your new acreage over the coming months/years.

Congratulations!!
I hope you find out more about the history of the land. I wonder if the sellers have ever put any of the history in writing. I only wish my grandparents had written a history of their land as they homesteaded it and lived out their lives on the land. At first they had "4 Forties" which in the U.P. of Michigan was 160 acres. (it was sold in 40 acre parcels- or acquired by homestead in same parcels).
I know that they eventually ended up with just 40 acres. I would LOVE to own what is left. I hope you can find out more about the beautiful land you will soon own.
