Color me enchanted!
Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at 7:40PM Today I took some time to play with my Singer 401. I haven’t done any “real” sewing on her yet, but today I tried out all the decorative stitches and cams.
What’s not to love? She flat flies sewing out these decorative stitches! Not one thread break, no heating up of the foot controller or the motor, no funky smell, I am really quite taken with this machine!
Aren’t they beautiful? I can’t wait to try some “stitch recipes” with these. No stabilizer was used here!
The light on the 401 and the 301’s is much better than on my 201, or the featherweights. These two models have a magnifier lens over the light, and it works surprisingly well. Jim’s going to have to figure out a way to add that feature to the FW’s and the 201.
I am missing the knee presser lift… living without pattern begin is still being pondered. I’m finding I don’t much mind manually doing a needle up/down. I do wish there were markings on the presser foot pressure adjustment. Without them, I will have to fiddle with each different project.
I love the fact that this machine is older than I am. It tickles me to death each time I see it!

LOL - I am a year older than my featherweight! I find that kind of funny because it is supposed to be an antique and I don't feel like one - yet!

I'm so glad you're loving your "new" machines.
Stitches look truly nice and consistent. I LOVE working with "new/old" machines and seeing what they all offer.
Can't wait until my sewing room is finished (teeny tiny compared to what yours will be) so I can set up my mom's 1950 Pfaff that I had reconditioned for my daughter after my mom gave it to her. I want to sew on that machine again!
That's the machine I have! I thought it looked familiar, so I dug out the instruction manual (can't get to the machine because it is stored in a tight corner) and sure enough its the 401. I remember when my dad bought it brand new for my mom. It's the machine I learned to sew on. I have always loved it! A few years back, my dad tried to get my sister to sell it in a yard sale and she said it would only bring $30 or $40 dollars. I jumped on it and said no one's gonna sell this thing--its going home with me!! I am so glad I have it--sentimental reasons, but it is also just a flat-out good machine! When I get the room it will be sitting out where I can use it more.
Hi again. Could you delete my last post because I already found the monogramm L cam I was looking for.
So I'm not looking for it anymore! Yay!
Thank you,
Laura
