Damage control

Reading back through some of the comments on my posts about my disappointment in the beautiful painted featherweight I purchased, I realize that perhaps I left the wrong impression about the seller.  I was disappointed in the machine… not the seller.

The machine arrived with a few flaws which I discussed.  The restoration was gorgeous, and very detailed.  The flaws could have easily been overlooked with a test sew out, and while it was quite a let down to have my machine arrive in less than perfect working order, I am confident in my choice of whom I chose to do the restoration.

Enough so that the machine was returned via UPS today, and I requested that rather than a refund, my purchase price be applied as a down payment on a 222k, whenever it can be found and restored.  Not for a moment during this transaction was I treated with anything less than professionalism. I like to do some research prior to about anything I purchase, and I trust my ability to choose the best person, product or method 9 times out of 10.

I am still very excited about owning a restored Featherweight!  And I know that the next one that arrives on my doorstep will be both beautiful and purr like a kitten!  Thank you Leo, for sticking with me through this.  I am probably the pickiest customer anyone could ever have.

CJ, I hope your 222 becomes available really soon! Wow! A 222! That's even nicer than a 221 — and I love my 221. :)

CJ:

You are one of my favorite bloggers ... truly. But I need to say that my "unrestored" Featherweight is one of the joys of my sewing room. Every time I get her out and start to sew, I look at the worn areas on the gold whatachmacalits (designs, I guess) and think about the women who have sewn on her before and how they placed their hands and how many hours they spent creating. She purrs .... mechanically, she is better than perfect! But I would not want her painted in metallic anything ... I love the black and the imperfections. Of course, she doesn't have any of those sounds that you heard .... I would not like that.

Just my humble opinion ... maybe because I am a senior citizen and somewhat noisy myself ... these old joints aren't as smooth as they once were!

I sincerely hope that you will find a Featherweight that calls your name .... they are truly a wonderful machine.

One year ago I bought a Singer 1938 Featherweight off of Craigslist from San Jose, Ca (never mind that I live in SC) I sent my dad down to pick it up sight unseen) and he mailed it to me. It had hardly been sewn on everything was there in the original black carrying case. It has never been refurbished and sewed beautifully the minute I took it out of the box and I did not even need to take it in to my sewing machine repair man for a check up. I feel so lucky to have this wonderful machine and do all of my piecing on it. My best advice is to oil it often using the owners manuel as this seems to be the only thing it needs or want on a regular basis. I oil mine at least once a week. Enjoy yours!
