Please recommend a tool...

I want to make fabric covered buttons.  I’ve looked at the i-Top 2.0, and one of those terribly expensive gadgets from the American Button Machine company… which is more than I wish to spend.  Doing a little research, it doesn’t seem as if the i-Top does a very good job with fabric buttons?  I don’t want any folds around the edges, that is totally unacceptable…

So, does anyone have a tool they can recommend?  I’d like to be able to cover buttons ranging from as small as a half inch on up to possibly 2 inches, or a bit smaller.

It has to make perfectly smooth fabric buttons! :)

I’m off to spend a day sewing with the girls.  It’s one of those rare occasions that I’m hauling the Bernina 630 out, because I want to finish grid hatching the side panels for the cover I’m making for it, and I discovered it would fit into my serger case, which will in turn fit in the front seat of my Miata!

My featherweight is shipping Monday!  Yay!

CJ, Way back when I lived in Texas before, a quilt shop in Beaumont had a button covering machine that did gorgeous buttons. They could do something like a decorated ring around the buttons (kinda like a border). I'm not sure if they still have it or if they can tell you anything but it's Sew What (also a Bernina dealer) in Beaumont and the owner's name is Glenda.

I have always had good luck with the sets you buy for making just a few buttons. I think it might be a Dritz product.

CJ, I've never had problems with the kits you can get. The trick is to make sure you have the right amount of fabric and your fabric isn't too thick. The back of the package usually has a template you can use. Before I would spend a lot of money on a special gadget, I'd purchase a kit and see how you do with it.

Just my opinion.
