Storm prep
Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 11:50AM It still cracks me up to be somewhere that when there is four or more inches of snow predicted, the town hunkers down because they aren’t equipped to handle it! We’re expecting a whopping (tongue in cheek) four to six inches, and I am so excited! While it’s never much fun if the power goes out, it’s not a disaster either.
I hate that we don’t have a wood stove here, or a gas hot water heater, but with the generator we can stay reasonably warm, just no hot showers. I always cook up extra food, make plenty of bread for sandwiches, and of course I can cook anything on the grill that we need. If there’s no power for more than a couple of days, then it’s time to move out to the RV, it’ll fully functional without electric. I’d rather stay in the house though.
I have a corned beef in the pressure cooker, that sounded good for dinner and the leftovers make great sandwiches, bread going, plenty of food in the fridge, and Jim will fill the propane bottles this afternoon for the fireplace in case it’s our only source of heat.
But I really like it! Snow is beautiful, the peace when there is no power always astounds me! It’s amazing how much white noise our homes generate. Jim and I read, play games, and stuff our faces with food. Keeps you warmer!
I have a bit more done on the wallhanging. I hope to complete another row today. This is going to take some time to complete!
I’m having so much fun with it though, that I’ve ordered another mural type that looks like stained glass, and I’ll probably start it right after this one. That way, I’m still having fun sewing but staying off my feet more than if I were quilting.
The poor pirate monkey quilt… it’s still on the longarm, untouched. I haven’t quilted anything in nearly a month, and my foot is quite grateful for it!

We usually have enough food stocked up to last for awhile if we can't get out due to snow or ice. Cooking on the gas grill is always an option for us too. Luckily we have a fireplace and wood stove in our home and wood to burn. I already told Larry that with the cold temps we are supposed to have next week, we are going to have to get them going (even if it plays with my sinuses). I hate being bone-chilled cold and not being able to get warm. Usually with the snow, we get a lot of eerie wind here too.
But, like you, I love the beauty of it.
Oh, that wall quilt is so beautiful! Your work, as always, is flawless. So glad you are off your foot and having fun embroidering.
I love the snow, too. No surprise there. :-) I love the peacefulness of it and the beauty. We have an insert in the basement fireplace, tons of wood, and it has a top we could cook on if need be. The upstairs fireplace is gas, so between the two, we have warm. My 87 and 85-year-old parents were without power for a few days earlier this year, but they have a woodstove in the family room of their one-level home, and were able to cook on its top and stay warm. They're amazing!
I always prepare for power outages and usually if I am prepared, we don't lose our power. :) We are supposed to get snow today too....I have no place to go and lots to do.
I love your wallhanging. What fabric are you using? How long to stitch out each panel? Do you let your machine rest between color changes?
I love you bird, but I will really look forward to the stained glass one!
Enjoy that snow, I love to sew during a snow storm. Up here in Mid-Missouri our 2 inches pooped out :(
I love the snow, also. Of course, I get anxious if I know my daughter is not tucked into her apt and that we might have to rescue her somewhere. Since we are more likely to get ice more than snow, everyone panics here in Middle TN with the hint of snow or ice. I love sitting in our new sunroom and have the snow falling around 3 sides of the room. Beautiful and peaceful.
Peacock is looking great!
It's beautiful, CJ. How are you stitching it together? Will this be for your living room?
Forgive a dumb question, but why would the power go out if it snows? I can understand that it might if there was an ice storm, but not just snow. Living up here in the "great white north," I don't ever remember power failing in the winter. Severe wind storms in the summer could knock out the main power transmission lines. Our electric lines are buried underground. We had a 22" snowstorm in December, but have only had 1" or 2" snowfalls since. Good times to stay inside and sew!
yes snow will be pretty - I just hope it is no ice! We too manage fine with the generator and the fireplace if the electric goes out - and there is always the camper if needed!
Glad we got the new car today - might not want to leave the house for a couple days if the roads are bad.

WOW! That is beautiful. I want to see how you finish it, I am intrigued.
I love snow days! Love to spend the day at my sewing machine watching the flakes come down. We have a couple of days this week with snow in the forecast. One to two inches will bring my town to a stand still I can't wait.
I cook on gas stoves... two kitchens ...., so when the power if off, I can still bake bread, home made pizzas, etc. Have a generator and a grill and an insert (two long rows of wood tarped on the porch), so we stay cozy. I'd rather not lose power, though. That makes it hard to listen to books on CDs while I sew. We live about 28 miles from a grocery store, but being prepared for storms or power outages isn't an issue... I just keep the pantry and freezers stocked.
It is interesting to watch the news and see the 'ants' scurrying about buying water, food, and batteries. Don't people think ahead and considered that something might just happen and they would need those things? Guess not.
I love how quiet it is outdoors during snow fall and sounds are muffled by the snow after it stops. It's just about perfect when the cardinals are on the ground around the feeder.... the red and white always reminds me of my favorite quilt colors.
CJ, I saw on our weather that you're getting the snow. It's supposed to hit here (in CT) by Tuesday. We had 2 storms already Friday & Saturday. Guess all the grocery stores will be crowded tomorrow. The worst part of losing power is not being able to flush--we're on a well. But we survive. The worst here that I remember was an ice storm one year before Christmas when we lost power for about a week. Haven't used the fireplace since--got a wood stove. Sounds like whatever you're prepared. Diane
