Design wall Monday
Monday, January 31, 2011 at 4:43AM Wow, it’s been quite awhile since I’ve participated in Judy’s design wall Monday. I was on an embroidery kick for a bit and didn’t even think about posting those projects there. Anyway, I do have something on my design wall this Monday!
This is to be my next “comfort” quilt. The problem is, I’m not sure of its destination yet. When I designed the blue/green/black one for a teen boy and then agreed with some of the comments about all that black perhaps not being the best choice, I decided to start from scratch. Something in soothing blue and green was my starting point.
I finally settled on the layout, and have started piecing the center. There’s no sashing in the blocks on my design wall yet, so that’s why they look different.
My dilemma now is that I’m not sure a teen boy would like this quilt. Which is
okay, it would be perfect for someone at the battered women and children’s shelter, but I really wanted to do a couple of quilts for teens first.
What do you think? Teen boy or adult female for this one?
I know what my problem is. Having raised teen boys, I can’t quite wrap my head around white fabric and a teenage boy paired up. Black on the other hand, blends with dirt quite nicely! LOL
When my eldest son got married and we instantly became grandparents to a seven year old boy, I made him a quilt… a black one! Maybe I’ll do another string quilt like that one, even though there’s a lot of black, there’s also a lot of color and the design might appeal to a teenager.
Head over to Judy’s and see what everyone else is up to this design wall Monday!

Decisions, decisions. I guess they give us something to think about. Love your design. Have a great day.
I like those colours very much, and the pattern is really stunning. It's what I would like for myself. For teenagers, I think black is OK as an accent. I agree that white is risky for young people -- it's going to have chocolate smudges and pen marks in no time! ;-)
I really like those blocks, the colors are great. My one son likes black and white, even though the white is so white, what do you do, I can't throw in cream or beige! or maybe I can on the next one, hmmm
Love your design. I agree, white can be problematic for a teen. But it depends on the teen. I can see your quilts final destination going either way.
I agree with the teen boys not doing well with so much white...what about using blue and brown/tan? I made a quilt last year in blues and browns and it turned out very masculine.
I think this is an ideal quilt for a teen boy. You know that many teens love black so using it in this quilt would be great! This is a fab quilt
I agree with teenage boys not being compatible with anything white!
I like the quilt but not for a teen boy. A string quilt with lots of colors and black in it also I think is great. Maybe whoever suggested no black to you for a teen was concerned with depression and thought there was too much black in the quilt? a little should be fine especially mixed with bright colors.

CJ, I still like the orginal design with the black in it. I too think it is appropriate for a teen, no matter what situation he is in. I believe that if a kid is troubled, you are giving him a gift of comfort, and will not be thought of as depressing just because there is black in it.. Just my opinion.
I think white or black is appropriate for a teen, if it fits the pattern. My kids and nephews love all quilts I make regardless of the color, though the boys would prefer I don't use too much pink or princess fabric, LOL
I would embroidery some boyish redwork designs in the center squares for the quilting--maybe animals, outdoor stuff, autos, or something else they might like. I think it is a great quilt.
My son asked for three colors in his quilt: black, gray, and blue. It was really hard not to add an accent color so I put in prints that had white and cream and that helped it become more cheerful :) I like your blues and greens but think you are right about it being a lot of white for a teen. Good luck!
I agree with dark colors for a teen boy. If you don't want black, have you thought about navy or teal? Those colors worked well for my boys.
I love those colors, and I agree boys and white aren't always a great combo, but maybe one will just love this quilt!
I wonder. Can you change the blue to a lighter blue and make that the "white" and then you can put the black where the existing blue is?
Then it wouldn't have so much black, and blue is definitely a boy color!
I personally don't see a problem with black. But if black is troubling, what about a charcoal gray or dark gray?
Love the quilt. I don't think of black as depressing. With other colors it can be stunning. I helped deliver 120 pillowcases from our guild to a developement of several homes for kids that don't fit in the foster care system. The age was from 6 yrs to 18. I was amazed at what the colors the boys choise for their pillowcases. One boy really wanted a black and pink pillowcase. The girls wanted to match their quilts.
It is wonderful what you are doing and anyone would be so happy to get a quilt of their own.

Both my boys loved black as teens...and still do. But if you are worried about using black...how about a dark chocolate brown? The design is wonderful, as always! You are so talented!!
CJ, are you piecing this with your new Juki?
Is it still fabulous?

I think I would opt for the female recipient . I showed the picture to my teen grandson and he just shook his head and said, "Gosh wish it had been made with something dark". Just one teens opinion--I asked if his sister would like it and he kind of grinned and said "Yeah, its a girl thing"
I make quite a few quilts for teens at a children's home in Louisiana. I use a lot of black in their quilts, along with brights and they tell me the kids grab those quilts right up. I think anything that's bright and cheerful would be good choices and have never had a problem using black or navy with all the bright fabrics. Your quilt looks fine! Anyone would love it!
