Cry Baby

Thanks everyone for the border tips on the Pirate Monkey Quilt.  I’m still not quite happy with the look, so I think I’m going to let it rest a day and see if my brain rejuvenates itself.

I’ve been hobbling around for a couple of months with plantar fasciitis and a pinched nerve, hoping that the foot excercises, anti-infammatory drugs and orthodic shoe inserts would fix me up, because my other choice is surgery, but yesterday evening I was reading and the phone rang, and I got up to answer it without slipping my shoes on first, came down flat on my foot, and it sure felt like something snapped free.  Hot pain, aching all night, and I can’t put my weight on it much.  No swelling though.

Jim has the car in New Orleans, so if I call and can get my appointment bumped up, that means I’ll have to park across the street since the truck won’t fit into the parking lot.  I don’t know if I can hobble that far!  I tried using an old cane Jim has, but it’s my left foot which means holding the cane with my left hand, and after about a minute of that I was pretty sure I’d kill myself.  LOL

But worse yet, it means there’s no way I can get around the yard to do all the watering, everything is going to die on me!  Aaaagghhh!  Who said getting old was fun?

If I was there I would take you to the doctor - I hope you can find someone to drive you - injuries to the feet are no fun. Hope no surgery is needed.

CJ...When I graduated from crutches to a cane after breaking my right kneecap, I was told to use the cane in my left hand. HTH!

I wish you were not so far away CJ, I would come and help---being alone and not feeling well is not easy. My husband traveled a lot with his work when we were younger, and I remember those times.
Our daughter has suffered with plantar fasciitis, and with time, meds, exercise and the correct shoes, she overcame it without any surgery. She also wears Birkenstock shoes around the house now when she gets home from work. Her doctor recommended that type of shoe right off when it first started affecting her foot.
If you can make it to the doctor's office perhaps if you call them on the cell phone they will come out to the truck and help you get into the office. I'm more worried about you getting into the big truck and driving---Take care.

I never said that about getting old...
However - think on the bright side - you COULD just sit and sew.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis

Hi CJ,
I had plantar faciitis for a very long time caused by my combat boots!
The pain is hard to get rid of ask me I know. In the end I had the above treatment, it's similar to the shockwave treatment used to breakup kidney stones. The docs send shockwave to the foot and it breaks up the bone spurs. It's worked for me in that the pain I have is bearable, it comes and goes, it's definately not intense and I don't require any meds. If I have to stand for long periods of time, such as in clinicals for nursing school, I always make sure I stretch my feet and calves. Stretching my calves definately helps. I also have orthotics which help.
It does take time to heel. good luck. Parm

Oh, CJ, how awful for you! I hope you can get some relief soon.

PF is the worst! One thing i do is keep a small bottle of water in the freezer. Roll your foot on it for about ten minutes or more. Do this as often as you like. It really helps. You may have a bone spur as well. Keep stretching that foot pulling with a towel.

Oh no! I'm sorry you are in pain. Hope you heal quickly!

Do you have a neighbor kiddo that wants to earn a few bucks watering for you? You could sit outside and shout orders, that might make you feel better. ;-)

And Carol, the water bottle in the freezer is genius. That would work great for a hot unbearable day! Instant cooling!

Parm, I have not heard of shock treatment for the spurs, I will definitely bring that up with my podiatrist when I go see him, thanks!

Ugh, I had that, too, but between stretching exercises and switching to Dansko clogs, it went away after a few months. It was when I was teaching and the teachers' bathroom was down two very long halls. Boy did I learn to hold it!!! Hoping you'll find a cure very, very soon.

One big thing I did for my plantar fascitis was to wear a night boot on my foot. I can say that wearing this boot for two to three months, that it is what brought my foot back to normal. The boot is what helped my foot heal. I'd swear by this treatment. The boot kept my ankle/foot at a 90 degreeish angle. My foot didn't bend forward due to the weight of covers and a sheet. Bought this boot at a medical supply store. It was around $70. HTH!

CJ, I work with a foot specialist sometimes in St. Louis who gave a seminar on plantar fascitis about a year ago and he stated that surgery rarely works for this and the best thing is (after getting the inflammation down) doing stretching exercises by standing in front of a wall and leaning forward in your bare feet stretching the ligaments in your feet. He has great sucess with this method. Sometimes cortisone injections help too. I feel your pain.

Oh I know how painful that is. I actually had a flair up after my first ever pedicure! I guess all of the rubbing and stuff she did to my foot. The next morning and the next three days I couldn't take a step without almost tears. We were on vacation so my husband went to the hotel ice machine and filled up the bucket. I sat with my heel in ice and it helped so so much. I am a fan of the ii method (ice and ibuprofen) of relief followed by hourly stretching. I also sleep on my stomach which is bad for the angle of the foot so I slide all the way down the bed until my feet hang off (I'm short so it is kinda funny as I can get lost in the covers). This helps me the most so I hope it helps you.

To use a cane you hold the cane in the hand that is opposite the injured foot. Left foot injured, cane is in right hand. Right foot is injured, cane is in left hand. I learned that when I had my knee surgery and had to use crutches and then a cane.

I'm sorry about your sore foot! I suffered from plantar fasciitis for about a year and finally had a cortisone shot which completely cured it. I know this doesn't work for everyone, but it did for me. I now am very picky about the shoes I wear (Merrells) and try to remember to stretch that tendon out. Good luck! I really do feel your pain:)
