Well bummer!
Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at 10:24AM I am almost finished with a second purse, down to the sides seams and I’m done! Unfortunately, I used denim for this one, and I wasn’t careful enough going over the extreme bulkiness of the side sections by the zipper area… I knocked the timing out.
You know how people always rave about the older Singers for doing heavy duty sewing? Yes, I’m perfectly aware that they aren’t industrial machines, but it appears to be a common opinion that they are tougher than our newer machines.
I have a pristine Singer 201-2, beautifully restored, and it does indeed sew like a dream. However, I won’t be finishing my purse on it! That was the plan, but not only will it not stitch through all those layers, I can smell the motor heating up, not a good sign!
This is not a fault of the Singer, rather it drove home to me just what a powerful machine my Bernina 830 is! The motor on it didn’t even breathe hard, but I wasn’t careful enough going through the thicker area, and I pulled the timing off.
Since it’s time for my annual servicing again anyway, I guess a trip north is in order very soon!

I recently tried to take in a pair of pants around the waist line and the fabric was too thick for my featherweight - would not go through it and had to get out the Janome. I thought it would handle it ok and didn't work for me.

Oh no! What happens when the timing gets off, is it something you can adjust from the set-up menu?
At least you have another machine ready to continue with other projects.
Have fun.
Got to love our Berninas. I just made a pair of jeans into a skirt for our DD - yesterday. At one point I had FOUR and SIX layers of denim- POOF - the 830 didn't even hesitate.
I followed your story on the 8 list, so it sounds as though you were able to finish?? Can't wait to see the new purse.
