A valuable lesson learned!

I was putting the last border on the baby quilt, when I smelled something burning.  Oh no!  I’d left the little Clover iron on, sitting on my sewing table, and the quilt top was laying over it!

It didn’t quite burn through, but it left a nasty scorch mark in one of the center blocks.  So, I spent my afternoon taking apart the quilt, replacing the ruined block, then putting it all back together.  I lost the red border in the process sadly, and I don’t think it looks as good without it, but I didn’t have any red left, so it got two yellow borders instead.

You can be sure I won’t leave that iron on again!  Anyway, it’s finally finished, I just need to get around to quilting it.

I like the blue and yellow border. I am partial to red also but I really like the one you finished with.

I think I like this 2nd one better with out the red but it's hard to tell since you hadn't finished the outer borders. Can't wait to see it quilted.

I am just glad that you didn't suffer something worse! As a house fire survivor, I am almost OC about candles or irons (even though that wasn't the cause).

Your quilt is still mauv-uless!

The quilt is beautiful. It just looks happy. Those nice bright colors just dance all over the quilt right up to the borders. Wow, scary stuff, such a close encounter with that iron. Glad you were right there and able to stop a total disaster.
Have fun.

Have you seen these iron rests?

I think I will get hubby to design one for me with the handle down and the hot iron up, not resting on the tile. It will be easier to grab. Now to just put that on his list of 99 things to do in the shop...

Sorry, CJ, but happy at the same time. Sorry it happened but happy you caught what was happening before anything more got ruined.

I agree with Cindy! This will be a great warning to all of us.

Bummer!!! I did like the red in the border, but what can you do? It's still very cheery and pretty.

Hi CJ,
I put my little clover iron in a (new/unused) clay flowerpot when I'm using it while it's turned on and hot, handle sticking up, out of pot.
Works well. I'm glad you're ok!

Glad you caught it ! I keep my little iron in a coffee mug...one that I picked up on vacation.

I was at a class last week and the instructor had a little clover iron. Her Dad had made her a stand for it. He made it out of wood with low blocks on all corners. He had routed the blocks on one end so that the stand that came with the iron fit into it. Very nice and the wood was up high enough that your material wouldn't have scorched as quickly anyway.
