The new Bernina Bias Binder

Recently on one of the Bernina Yahoo groups I read, several people were trying to figure out how to attach the new Bernina Binder, (Kit #88, with presser foot 95/95C).  Myself included!  The instructions in the box are written just fine, but the pictures are awful… and if you’re like me, you need a picture before it makes sense!

I’ve attached two images of the binder attached and ready to sew.  You’ll need to loosen up all the screws before it will line up flush with the presser foot, then tighten them back down.  I think with the instructions included and the following pictures, it will make sense.  I hope anyway.

Do you see the two small screws to the left and slightly below the black thumbscrew?  Mine came set into the middle holes.  You’ll need to move them to the front two holes.

The binding it makes is just a smidge wider than a quarter of an inch.

Now to try it on something needing bound!

CJ.... how wide of binding does it make? Thanks! RA

CJ, a binder is something I have considered in the past. Is this the largest finished size available for the Bernina Binder? Like the contrast stitching, so much easier for mature eyes to see. Did you adjust the needle position any, or could you? Also wonder how much fabric thickness it will tolerate. Thanks for the pics.
Have fun.

I recently purchased a similar foot for my Brother machine. However, after playing around with it, I decided it was made to add bias binding accents to the edge of a single layer of fabric like the edging on a little girls peter pan collar. Are you able to attach binding to the quilt sandwich with the Bernina foot? Or does it prepare bias strips into bias binding for traditional application methods? Or? Okay... I really just want more details about how this foot actually works on the Bernina and maybe even the Brother machines. Now returning to lurkdom...

How wide will the binding be?

CJ, this is close, but not quite right. The fixed part of the binder, and the sloped plate of the swing arm with the binder are both suppose to be flush with the stitch plate. I've taken a photo of this setup and will post it to the series 8 group. Also, the 2 screws, that were in the wrong position to begin with, need to come to the front 2 screw holes rather than the back 2 screw holes.

Cindy, thank you for explaining that better. I've corrected my photos, I appreciate it!

Can I use this on a quilt?

You're welcome CJ! Pam, I believe you can use it on a quilt. In fact, that is what I bought mine for.

I'm curious about how this foot differs from Bernina's two other binding foot #84. I owen foot number 95 and am considering purchasing the #88 foot (shown here) but wonder what the difference between the #84 and #94 combo is.

I have both the older binder (84/94) and just got the 88/95c. Even though the older binders worked beautifully for me (I have it in all three sizes) the new binder is engineered far better. The slide away feature in itself is amazing. When the binder is slung away the little fabric guide allows you to sew a perfect 1/4" or scant 1/4". With using the older binder the 94 foot has only one toe so you couldn't just sew with it. It was designed to use ONLY with the binder attachment. Additionally, the older binder does not swing out of the way. When I need to correct a few areas I had to completely remove the binder attachment plus the foot and install a regular foot. This would be annoying if I just needed to stitch a few stitches then return back to using the binder. This foot is expensive ($250 for the 88/95) but I truly feel it is a must have.

What is the difference from the 88 and the 87? What else can you do with the 95, do we realy need it to make the 88 working?

Does the binder attachment go around square corners? My friend has the attachment and she cuts it off at each corner and then starts again. I certainly don't want to do that on my quilts. Please let me know. Thanks.
