Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at 9:16AM The great thing about waking up at two o’clock in the morning, bright eyed and bushy tailed (yeah right) is that you can start soaking dried beans for the necessary eight hours, and still have time to let them cook all day!
So yesterday in the wee hours, I did just that. I put some navy beans in water to soak, and around ten o’clock I started making bean soup.
It was might tasty! My secret ingredient is cloves, it just makes the soup. I try and find 3-5 pound smoked picnic roasts, and I toss them in whole until the meat falls off the bone.
I also made cornbread and a pumpkin pie, they all go together beautifully!
Today I’m going to finish sewing the log cabin rows together, no cooking today as we’ll have leftovers tonight.
One of our friends got robbed while at church on Sunday. We are hearing a lot of this lately!

Ummm, YUM! :)
Double YUM!! I've been thinking it's time for pumpkin(squash) pie too. I canned a lot of squash last year & need to use it up.
Robbery---I suspect we'll see more of it. Times are tough, too many turn to alcohol & drugs to kill their sorrows & that takes money they don't have. There was a time I never locked my doors...even at night...now if I run downtown to get the mail or go to the store I lock them. What does that say for life in a very small town?? We seem to have more people moving in that I just don't trust...for one thing their sticky fingered reps precede them. One good thing is they never stay very long....just long enough to run up bills & get kicked out for not paying the rent.
robbed at church - that doesn't sound good! No wonder after we all get to the quilting group at the church on Friday mornings the janitor asks if we want the door locked as he leaves.

And now that I'm home, it's back to cooking, which I missed! The looks wonderful!
Were they actually robbed at church, or was their home robbed while they were at church? Once all our female choir members were robbed as they'd left their purses in the choir room while they were singing in the sanctuary. That was years ago and after that their purses were locked up in an office.
Oh, my goodness! That is scary being robbed at church. No place is safe anymore. Now the pork and cloves sounds good...but I hate beans... sigh...what if I subbed in some other veggie??
Your bean soup looks delicious. I'm the only one at my house that really likes beans so I don't have them often. Will bean soup freeze and reheat well?
I love the idea about the cloves! Tell me how much you use and when do you add them? I love ham and beans, and of course the cornbread! PatK
