Glue... a girl's best friend!

I’ll take a water soluble glue stick over a diamond any day, it has a lot more uses!

These are my favorites, I always have backups on hand in my studio, although the Elmer’s School Glue works as well or better than the Crafter’s Glue, and I will probably just stick with it in the future.  Liquid glue is my least used glue.

It’s a toss up between the 505 adhesive spray and the glue stick, as to which is my favorite.  Not everyone can tolerate the fumes from the sprays, so a glue stick is a great alternative.

I use the sticks mainly for three things.

  1. I run a glue stick down the tape of a zipper, “stick” it in place, and sew it on.
  2. I apply a glue stick to the backs of trim (rick rack, soutache, etc) and “stick” it in place and sew it down.
  3. My favorite, is to run the glue stick around the bottom of the inner hoop of my embroidery hoops.  This makes placement a breeze!  Using your hoop template inside the hoop, place it on top of your fabric and line it up exactly where it needs to be.  Press it down so it sticks, then simply slide your outer hoop beneath your fabric and the inner hoop will stay put.

But I couldn’t live without 505 adhesive spray either.  I use it to baste small quilted items such as table runners together instead of pinning, then quilt away.  And since I rarely hoop anything for embroidery, I like to use 505 spray to adhere my fabric to my stabilizer, to eliminate any shifting.

What great ideas do you have for using adhesives in your sewing room?

Hi CJ,
I use a glue stick to hold buttons in place before I sew them on with machine of course.

CJ - Where are you buying 505 these days? I am having difficulty finding it at my usual places that carry all other OESD products. I am having so much trouble finding it that I can't help wonder if they are getting ready to discontinue or re-formulate or something. Even the newer tutorials or projects at OESD's site seem to suggest the 101 quilt basting spray for what I would have used 505 in the past. Just wondering.....claudia

Hattie, yes gluing buttons on works great too!

Claudia, I get my 505 spray in the larger can here.

I haven't ever tried 101 spray, I'll be visiting my dealer in a few weeks I hope, if I remember I'll pick up a can and see how it works.

I use the 1/4inch Steam a Seam when putting zippers in. It takes a little longer than using a glue stick but works great.
For sewing buttons on by machine, use a piece of Scotch brand Magic tape. Just tape the button down and sew. Tape comes off easy.
Not recommended for any other brand of tape.

That's a great tip Gram, I will have to try that out and compare!
