Update on the Bernina 8 series seam guide

I had to resort to playing with this seam guide to get my answers.  My dealer was swamped yesterday and the tech had no idea about this new seam guide, but he did manage to put the guide rod all the way into the presser foot.

I am positive it should go like this, but mine is such a tight fit that I can’t do it with my hands alone, I need a pair of pliers.  My hubby will take care of that for me by adjusting the diameter of the fit.

It’s a perfect fit lengthwise, the smaller portion of the guide shank is the exact size of the presser foot width, and now the guide that rides along the fabric can be moved close enough to be useful.

There is no interference from the dual feed lever.  The purple arrow here is pointing to the dual feed lever, and as you can see there is plenty of space between it and the seam guide rod.  Yes, I checked it while sewing!

I would be interested in hearing if the fit is too snug on other’s presser feet as well.  I will have to see if I can get an official response from Bernina on this.

I was pleased to hear that my 830 was exceptionally clean inside, given that I have 3.8 million stitches on it since February… that’s more stitches than I have on my much adored 630 period, which I’ve had for 3 years!  The 830 sure inspires me to sew!

I'll give this a try later, CJ. You have me curious. What's interesting to me is, as shown in your photo, that (for example) the 1D foot has only one screw in the back of the foot when it's made for two screws. This is true on other "D" feet.

Off Topic- CJ, is there a way that you can set up where any comments come directly to my email as if possible on your other Tinkletime blog?
Yes, I'm on your Feed here but I just like when someone posts I immediately know it.

Thanks.

This is good to know that the dual feed doesn't hit the bar. Hopefully, after I return from Houston next week, I will have some play time. I need to play with the 830 more as well as the V6 software!

Hi,
I was the one who asked on the group. I did go to my dealer and asked him about the seam guide. He thinks that when they dipped the feet/ rod in the silver coating it when on to thick. The seam guide he had in the store did fit a foot that mine did not. We ended up trading seam guides but his still don't fit all my feet. On a side note he did call the Bernina educator who said the seam guide should only fit the D feet. I find this strange because there should also be a seam guide given for the C and non-coded feet if that were the case.

Sue, I hate to contradict a Bernina educator, but that is incorrect. If you lower your presser foot into sewing position, you will see that the old seam guide from the Artista line will not work on the 820/830 with the "C" or "D" feet. The new seam guide however, works on both.

CJ,
It didn't make sense to me at the time either that the seam guide would only be for the D feet. I'm going to bribe my husband with ribs for dinner and get him to modify the rod to fit all the feet. It's a shame to have to sand it down because I'll lose the finish.
