Bernina software on a Mac

There’s lots and lots of folks out there happily using a Mac instead of a Windows computer with their Bernina machines and software.

There’s even a very helpful group on Google with plenty of knowledgeable folks to help you get started.  But before I made the switch, one of the things I wanted to know and couldn’t find anywhere was… what does it look like?

Most of us customize our desktops just like we do our sewing rooms.  We have a place for everything and we become comfortable with the arrangement.

Here’s a picture of my iMac with the Bernina embroidery software running.  I use VMWare’s Fusion as my virtual machine, running Windows Vista.  I like to run it in “Unity” mode, with my Windows task bar at the bottom of the screen, and my Mac Dock (the equivalent of the windows task bar) over on the left.

It’s incredibly easy, and switching between the two is seamless.  Both operating systems can open applications from each other.  Anytime I click on a web link or email link etc, while working in Windows, it opens Safari or Mac Mail on OS X.

It goes without saying that it runs beautifully, or I wouldn’t be using this setup!

Have to admit, this is way over my head. I'll stick to my sewing/quilting and "tad" of software knowledge that I have.

How do you manage the key shortcuts on the VM Fusion with Bernina?

Carol, you can apply your Mac keyboard shortcuts (for example, instead of the Windows "CTRL + C", you'd use the Mac "CMD + C" but I've found those don't play well with our Bernina software nor EQ6.

It works exactly like Windows if you uncheck the option to use the Mac keyboard shortcuts. Under the VMWare main menu bar at the top, click on "preferences". Then under "Keyboard & Mouse" and "Key Mappings", uncheck "Enable key mappings".

I'm in the process of looking into buying a new computer. I'm trying to decide between an HP (which I feel comfortable with) and a Mac (which I really want and my son thinks I should purchase). You answered two of my questions ... whether I could run my Bernina software and EQ (I have version 7) on a Mac with an emulator. Thanks for the info!!!

How much room do I have to designate from my Mac to windows to run the Bernina software? And can this be added on to later?
